The History Of Reno’s Mapes Hotel

The Mapes Hotel in Reno, Nevada met its demise on Superbowl Sunday of 2000 when 75 pounds of explosives packed inside the structure’s support columns brought it to the ground. The controlled demolition came despite years of effort by a number of groups within the community to preserve the building with lawsuits, redevelopment proposals, and grass roots lobbying efforts. The National Trust for Historic Preservation even took up the cause, challenging the destruction in a lawsuit that eventually reached the Nevada Supreme Court.

While the efficacy and justification of demolishing the Mapes is debatable, one thing that is not is the glorious history of the hotel. It was built in’47, and signaled the start of the modern era of casino gambling. Despite the notoriety of Bugsy Siegel and the Flamingo in Las Vegas, it was the Mapes that became the first building in the nation to have a hotel, casino and live entertainment under one roof. It also became the hotel of choice for celebrities staying in Northern Nevada. Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe stayed at The Mapes during the filming of ‘The Misfits’. Joseph McCarthy, America’s famed anti-Communist crusader, admitted to a reporter over cocktails in the Mapes Lounge that he really didn’t have a list of Communists in the US despite his frequent and vitriolic insistence to the contrary.

In the 50s and 60s it became, along with Lake Tahoes Cal-Neva Lodge the place to be seen in Northern Nevada. The top floor, window-walled Sky Room showcased performances by the legends: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jackie Gleason, Louis Prima, Mae West, Milton Berle, Sammy Davis, Jr., and the Marx Brothers among others. Subsequent years were not kind to downtown Reno but the Mapes continued to do well during the 60’s and 70’s. The hotel finally closed in’82, due more to financial difficulties experienced by the Mapes family caused by one of their other Northern Nevada gaming properties than anything else.

Reno has yet to experience the sort of growth that has been seen in Southern Nevada, and for that reason the destruction of the Mapes is more open to debate than the hotel demolitions to the south. Even the demolition of The Sands–perhaps the most historically significant casino in the state–is hard to argue against given the inability of such a small property to compete in the current Las Vegas marketplace and in light of the value of the mid-strip real estate.

This is not the case in Reno, where land and buildings for development in virtually every casino area are abundant. The official reason that the Mapes had to come down was that the city needed the land–which sits along the banks of the Truckee River–to expand its riverside district of art galleries, restaurants and shops. The revitalization of downtown Reno is definitely needed and a legitimate goal, but at the same time it is hard to think that the Mapes was a barrier to this. Indeed, a number of proposals for redevelopment including office space, artists lofts and upscale senior housing would have probably served to enhance the livability of the downtown area. For whatever reason, the City Redevelopment Authority wouldn’t approve any of the proposals and the fate of the Mapes was sealed.

The behavior of the City Redevelopment Authority throughout the process has come into question. Overlooking the Truckee River, the hotel was perfectly placed between the downtown casino area and the riverfront district. In’96, the city purchased the htoel and began accepting proposals for redevelopment. Despite receiving a number of proposals that made sense both in terms of their financial workability and positive impact on the downtown area, the City Redevelopment Authority nixed all of them and insisted that the hotel be razed.

After the demolition of The Mapes Hotel, the lot remained vacant for almost a year until a temporary ice skating rink was constructed in the winter of 2001. The site now houses a permanent ice skating rink which, while not a bad use for the land, brings into question the insistence by the City Redevelopment Agency that none of the proposals to preserve the building were viable. Clearly, they had no specific plan or even general idea of what to do with the land but for some reason wanted to see the hotel come down. This has led to all manner of speculation, ranging from financial self interest to a rumor that the structure was ‘haunted’ and needed to be destroyed to forestall future paranormal activity in Washoe County. Whatever the reason, the city of Reno lost a valuable landmark of a more civilized era.

Business Can Rely On Fast Service With Private Jet Hires

In today’s economy, many businesses are making cutbacks. It might seem extravagant to consider chartering a private jet for your team. However, chartering a jet can help your company make sales and make money. There are many benefits to jet chartering and they outweigh the rental costs. Make sure that you do not over-economize to the detriment of your company. Renting a private jet for your sales team can maximize their productivity and increase the chances that they will make that important sale.

Dealing with major airlines can be a huge hassle. Although most airlines do strive to provide the best possible customer experience, the sheer number of airline passengers makes this goal problematic for major airlines to achieve. When your team flies on a major carrier, they will need to wait in several lines: to check in, to check their bags, to go through security, and to board the plane. If you charter a private jet, you can bypass the crowds, the lines, and most of the hassle. Of course, your salespeople will still have to go through security. They will be able to skip the longest check-in lines. Even boarding and take-off will be faster because the flight crew will only have to seat and secure a few people. The time your team saves can be spent in the office or on other sales calls.

One of the best benefits of private jet rental is flexibility.. When you book a ticket with a major airline, it can be very difficult to make changes to that ticket. You cannot transfer it to another salesperson or make a change to your departure time. Keep your team flexible by renting private jets.

With a private jet charter your employees will also have the privacy required to work on last minute detail, hold a team meeting or even have a run through of the presentation. There is no worries about bothering other passengers and there are also no worries about not be able to concentrate and get their work finished. Private jet charters offer the peace and comfort that can not be provided by commercial air flights.

A relaxing private flight, where your employees can review their presentations and prepare, can help your employees do their best. They will therefore be more likely to make the sale. More sales means more money for your company. Increase the success of your business by taking advantage of private jet rental companies. Your sales team, and your bottom line, will thank you.

Chartering a private jet, is less costly that you may think. For information on a private jet charter log onto www.privatejetscharter.net

Walt Disney World Holidays – What You Should Know About Dining on Your Disney Christmas Vacation

Are you planning a visit during the Walt Disney World holidays? A Disney vacation during the Christmas season can be especially magical, filled with fun, festivity, and good food as well. This article will focus on what you should know about meals at Disney World during this time of year, and some strategies for the best way to plan a Disney vacation to make the most of your time and dining budget.

First of all, when making your dining plans….and if you are going between Christmas and New Year’s you MUST make dining plans….you need to realize that you will be at Walt Disney World during the busiest time of the year. While this does not mean that you can’t have a wonderful vacation, what it does mean is that you have to plan ahead, because you will be visiting with many, many, many other people.

So, think about dining in advance, and if your plans include any table service meals, make your Advanced Dining Reservations (ADRs) before you leave for Disney World. And if you are going during Christmas week, then make them now.

It is important to understand that, when it comes to ADRs, Disney policy allows people the chance to make Advanced Dining Reservations months ahead of time, currently’0 days in advance. So this means that folks have been making ADRs for Christmas week for a long time now. The most popular restaurants and times fill quickly, especially for the big days of Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve, and New Years Day. So it is not realistic to expect to just walk up and get a table during this week: you might get lucky, but why chance it? If table service dining is something you really want to do, then don’t delay on this.

What do you do if you can’t get ADRs for any of your restaurant choices? All is not lost, because while the most popular ones at the parks may be full, it is likely that the ones at the hotels are still available. The resort hotel restaurants are frequently quite good, and it is a great way to see some of the lovely Holiday decorations at the resorts. Plus, it can be very nice to get away from the crowds at the parks for a few hours.

Another good strategy, especially if you can’t get decent ADR times, is to consider eating meals at “off” times. Try having your main, table service meal for lunch instead of dinner. Eat early: lunch at 11, dinner at 5…or late: lunch at 2, dinner at 8. You may be able to get table service seating this way, and for counter service meals, the crowds tend to be a little lighter during these times.

Don’t overlook the standard advice about eating some meals in, especially if you have access to a kitchen. Breakfasts in the room are a given: great way to save time and money. And many folks who have a full kitchen like to do their entire holiday meal, turkey and all, in their room. This can be a nice way to create some very special memories…and save money in the process.

So if you have wondered about the best way to plan a Disney vacation when it comes to dining during the Walt Disney World holidays, it is simple: plan ahead! You will not regret doing so, and in fact, when you are at Disney and your meals are stress-free, you will be so glad you did! This is the perfect way to make sure your vacation is remembered for special holiday moments…and not waiting in endless lines for food.

Benefits And Disadvantages Of Traveling With Travel Agency And By Your Own.

When you decide to go someplace on vacations the first question you are faced with is how to organize your trip. At least, you need tickets and accommodation. Still, if you are going abroad, the situation becomes more tangled. You will require visa, overseas passport and a little bit of information about a country you are coming to. The citizens, living & traveling inside European Union borders are in better situation. They are free to travel to any EU country without any supplementary document & visas. However let’s suppose you have selected a country where you need visa. Well, now it’s time to make some preparations for your trip. At first, whether you trust organizing your trip to a travel agency, or organize it by your own. If you prefer the first variant:

Benefits

1) Convenience. You don’t have to besiege embassy and wait in long waiting lines. You do not need to worry about purchasing tickets & reserving hotels. 2) Price. Sometimes travel agencies have specific agreements with hotels and the price becomes cheaper. The same thing can be said about avia & train tickets. 3) Comfort in the country of destination – you are mostly provided with transfer to hotel & the representative of the agency can solve any of your problems. 4) Your vacation is coordinated. You have a choice of excursions; you will be shown the best shops and the most interesting attractions.

Disadvantages 1) Unfortunately, not all the agencies can be relied on, some of them disappear with the client’s money. 2) Most of the people don’t like to be specified – by pleasure trips, by return tickets or by the necessity of staying in the hotel they’ve selected. 3) It is not always affordable – often the excursions, proposed by the agency representatives are more costly than in other places in the city.

If you choose the second variant, you should be prepared to face some problems, but of course, this variant has its bright sides too.

Benefits 1) You are free to select there & when to go. You are free to change your hotel and for your return ticket. 2) You are most likely to see the sites, not shown to regular tourists. 3) It’s a kind of challenge. Cannot imagine your holidaywithout risk and adrenaline? So, this variant is for you! 4) You can seek and find a cheaper variant & not just accept what the agency proposes.

Disfavours 1) Once again – risk. You are not quite safe when travelling alone in the foreign country. Nowadays you are not quite safe anywhere, but still. 2) It causes some troubles in the stage of organization – getting a visa can be a trouble. Interview, invitation & a lot of documents – all this can be unavoidable. So, prepare to waste some time & nerves.

Anyhow, the choice is yours.

Australia – What We All Love About the Country

People from all over the world have always regarded Australia as one of the world’s top destinations to visit. With the many different attractions that can be found in this ‘Land Down Under,’ it has surely become popular to many tourists. Here are some of the famous attractions that Australians boast about:

Beaches
Australia is a beautiful giant island and because of this, tourists are provided with an endless option of beaches that they can visit. If you head to any of the beaches within the cities and towns you will find that it is crowded by surfers who are desperate to ride the waves. In fact, going to the beaches has become such a regular activity for the locals and most of them flock to the beach during the weekends to be able to cool off and relax.

There are countless beaches in Australia and several of them in Sydney alone. Bondi and Coogee are very known to be a place for backpackers; if you are looking to get the hippy feel, then you should consider visit Byron Bay, which is perfect if you want to learn how to surf. In the South of Australia, you can find Cactus Beach, and while this place can be a bit secluded, it is perfect if you need to get away from the city and want to relax.

Besides the famous beaches there are loads of others that are much less well known but just as nice, such as Cactus Beach which is south of Sydney and much quieter than the aforementioned.

Barbecues
You have probably heard of this expression before: “throw another shrimp on the Barbie”. Australians have always been known for having the best beef in the world; Take that slab of beef and put it on the grill, imagine how magnificent that barbecue would be. Australians are very passionate about their food as they are of their booze. Put those two things into the equation and you get a party… Australians know how to have a good time and most especially, they can throw amazing barbecue parties.

Barbecues
One thing we all know and “love” Australia for is its reputation for the “barbie”. Australian people in general are hugely passionate about their foods and of course the booze to go with it! Slap a bit of beef on the barbie (or a bit of croc or rue), open the beer and you got yourself a bit of a party going on there. Barbecue parties are an Australian’s passion and expertise!

Wilderness Camping
If you are looking to experience Australia in a different way, then you can consider exploring the wilderness. Take a trip outside the busy cities and embrace nature in a very unique way. You will definitely need to rent a car for this, but if you are lucky enough to meet a local who can take you around, then that is just the best way to explore the wide landscape of Australia.

Everyone who visits Australia should explore the country’s beautiful landscape. The best way to do this is to go camping and to indulge in a few nights of peace and quiet, far from the hustle and bustle of the city. You do not even have to worry if you did not pack any camping gear because there are specific companies that cater to this very need. It would also be nice if you could meet a friendly local who will take the time to bring you around because that is the best way to explore the wild, when you have someone to show you around.

Boating Safety Information

Before you even consider using your brand new vessel out for a cruise on the sea it is in your own best interest to take a boat safety class and have a boat safety review to check for the required safety equipment. The US Coast Guard can provide you with a list of required and proposed boat safety devices.

Life jackets, or personal drifting tools as they are formally called, should be promptly available for every occupant of the vessel. They must also be conformed to the built of the person who is intended to use them in case of an emergency. They should be in good working order with all the straps and clips in place and usable. It is a good recommendation to have them fitted to the passengers so that if required they can be put on without much further adjusting. In a number of states there is a minimum age for which the wear of a life vest is required every time.

As a large part of boating safety there must also be present on board a recently inspected fire extinguisher. It should be clearly labelled so that anyone can see it if necessary and get to it in time. There are varied kinds of fire extinguishers, created to put out different types of fires. For boating safety it is suggested to get a Type B or C fire extinguisher, these are designed for putting out fires initiated or fuelled by oil, grease and gas, or electrical fires.

As a final part of boating safety, particularly for vessels with gasoline engines and particularly if the engine is mounted in the vessel, good ventilation is cardinal.

Not only to keep away from any development of carbon monoxide, endangering the crew with toxic conditions, but also to prevent gasoline smoke from building up and becoming a dangerous fire hazard.

Water Island – Life is Good

Filed under: Travel — Tags: — Jim Wilkinson @ 8:07 am
by Jim Wilkinson

Peaceful days. Starry romantic nights. Palm tree lined sandy beaches. This has to be paradise!

The fourth and smallest main island of the U.S. Virgin Islands is Water Island or, what has been called “the last virgin”. Water Island is small, only 491 acres. It has the look and feel of a very private island. In the summer full time residents number about 100. In the winter the number swells to 200!

Because the roads are very often only 10 or 12 wide and in disrepair, the most common mode of transportation is a golf cart. A traffic jam here is defined as when two or three cars pass each other. No joke.

Honeymoon Beach is the main attraction for both the handful of full time residents and visitors. The 1/4 mile white stretch of sand is perfect for laying in the sun, snorkeling or just floating in the crystal clear blue water. It is not uncommon to arrive at the beach and be the only ones there. Sitting on the beach and watching the fish jump and the Pelicans dive help relieve any stress you might have brought with you.

If you are looking for a place to stay on Water Island some of the homeowners rent their homes out when they are off island. Colorful Bananaquit birds, or also known locally as “Sugar Birds”, Iguamas and gorgeous Hibiscus and Bouganvilla complete the tropical setting. You can quickly see why first time visitors fall in love with the island and return every year.

Living here is not for everyone. The only commercial establishments on Water Island are a lunch wagon that serves lunch at Honeymoon Beach every day and dinner on Saturday nights, a small beach bar with tropical concoctions and a small restaurant that is open occasionally, no one seems to mind. All supplies must be brought over from nearby St. Thomas.

Transportation to and from the island is by either private boat or the regularly scheduled small ferry. If larger items, such as cars and appliances have to be brought over, barge service is available.

Real estate does come on the market occasionally but does not last very long as there are only about 100 houses and the demand to own a home on Water Island is at a premium. There has been a small amount of new construction over the past 5 years.

The Water Island Civic association, founded in the 1960’s takes care of most of the island with intermittent assistance from the Virgin Islands’ government. There is also a Water Island Search and rescue organization that takes care of medical emergencies and fires. They have an ambulance and a fire truck. Both organizations are made up by Water Island resident volunteers.

Initially used by the U.S. Government in the 1940s, they partially constructed an underground fort, Fort Segarra, as part of the U.S. defenses during WWII. Fort Segarra sits abandoned today but a lot of reidents and visitors visit it to enjoy the panoramic view of the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean.

Control of Water Island was transferred from the federal government to the territorial government on December 12, 1996, making Water Island the “Last Virgin”. In the late 1990’s the Department of the Interior began transferring Water Island land to the long-time residential leaseholders.

The Glaring Benefits of Learning to Speak German

With our world increasingly getting globalized, the benefit of learning a second language is gaining more importance and relevance. Many individuals are getting German language lessons because of opportunities like career advancements and job security it presents. For some, business is not the only underlying motivating factor, but also to gain a better understanding of the world’s cultures, as well as the travel opportunities it presents. Others just simply want to make new friends and acquaintances – in their neighborhood, in the next state, or in another country. Whatever the reasons are, the time to learn how to speak German is now or never.

In several highly industrialized and computerized countries around the world, German is already highly spoken. Being bilingual will open up new doors on employment and career opportunities. Many business, financial, and production related jobs are generated from Germany, and they are always looking for foreign partners and business associates with the English-speaking community.

If you are into traveling to many wonderful and exotic places of the world, this is another great reason to learn how to speak German. The travel that awaits a tourist in Germany is truly an experience not worth missing out. Old castles and forts, urban and quaint areas are abundantly spread and found all throughout Germany and its surrounding countries. Beautiful scenic, serene, and captivating places can be visited such as the Swiss Alps, as well as small ski towns in the German countryside. If you are a skier, you probably would want to go to such places and take in the majesty it presents while enjoying your skiing run.

Maybe another reason you want to learn the German language is because of the German-speaking people that you meet and encounter in your daily schedule. German natives and non-native German speakers are all nice people to interact and commune with. So you should make learning German a priority to make you have a better perspective of the cultures of other fellow global individuals.

Learning how to speak the German language is to your great favor no matter how much or how little you learn from it. Wherever you’re located in the world – whether you are living, working or studying abroad, or just hoping to make a good impression with your German friends and business peers and superiors, knowing a foreign language can help you stand apart and make you a better individual inside and out, for all your life.

Electric Is The Best

Filed under: Travel — Tags: — Cameron Mitchell @ 8:01 am
by Cameron Mitchell

It?s little surprise that a growing number of homeowners have chosen an electric fireplace for their residences. The appliances add the warmth and charm of gas or wood-burning fireplace but at a fraction of the cost.

Manufacturers shipped 445,000 electric fireplaces, freestanding stoves and inserts to customers in 2007, say officials with the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association. That same number stood at just 300,000 in 2004.

It?s no surprise that the electric fireplace is gaining in popularity; The appliance has several benefits that its gas and wood-burning counterparts can?t duplicate. An electric fireplace, for instance, can be located anywhere in a home, does not need to be vented and is easy to maintain. An electric fireplace is also simple to operate, and the appliance, because it costs less than either wood-burning or gas fireplaces, can leave more dollars in the pockets of homeowners.

The electric fireplace is perfect for condo owners or apartment dwellers because the appliance can be installed in any location that has electricity. Homeowners can install their electric fireplaces in their bedrooms, dens, offices or basements, just by plugging them into the nearest outlet.

An electric fireplace is easy to operate, too. Owners simply turn them on with the press of a button. In fact, the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association says that electric fireplaces are designed to operate as plug-and-play appliances, just like televisions or stereos.

Maintaining an electric fireplace is simple, too. The biggest task homeowners face involves replacing an electric fireplace?s light bulbs when they burn out.

Maintaining an electric fireplace poses little challenge, either. Homeowners simply have to change their electric fireplace?s light bulbs when they burn out. This shouldn?t cause even the most repair-phobic homeowner any concern.

Finally, there?s price. According to the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association, gas and wood-burning fireplaces cost $3,000 to $5,000 to install once a home has already been built. The association says that an electric fireplace, though, can cost as little as $500 to purchase and install.

In today?s tough economic times, an electric fireplace is an affordable way to add beauty and warmth to a home. It?s little wonder that the sales of these appliances remain so steady: Homeowners looking to provide an easy boost to their living spaces recognize the value of electric fireplaces.
